Commas & Ampersands

Commas & Ampersands is a collection of original short drama written by Stephen Moore. While postmodern and seemingly solemn in nature, the pieces also include elements of playfulness and whimsy, captured in a way that only Moore can.

In the preface, Steve discusses his methods towards developing these and other plays written over a period of time. After hearing about Suzan-Lori Parks's 365 Days/365 Plays, he decided to embark on a similar project - write and produce a finished project a day. Although this lofty goal quickly fell by the wayside, Steve still managed to produce a total of 63 plays over a relatively short period, each of them revealing something about himself and his writing. In the piece "play 7: to dwell on dreams," Steve found himself already lamenting how difficult it was to write. However, he came up with this insightful bit of dialogue, spoken by a pair of unnamed entities.

A: To what extent does what you write depict who you are?
B: To every extent. It reveals something beyond who you are.
A: Your writing shows something else, something you can only put into words unspoken.
B: "Who you are" is not whom others see, is not whom you see, it simply is - who you are.

And so, Steve's first chapbook becomes something more than just a collection plays he wrote. It is an expression of who he is, related in a way that could not be produced in any other venue. Steve's writing is who he is, and who he is becomes what he writes.
