Mathematics of Fire

Mathematics of Fire is a collection of 16 poems focusing on the struggle of 21st century Midwestern life. It blends the traditional with the contemporary, as well as religion, politics, and the social climate of Middle America. Wild’s distinct poetic voice complements his unique perception of the world in poems such as "Cerulean Butterfly."

My God, the inspiration and the will
That brings you to the surfacing of bone.
The terror of a hand that can erase itself.

- "Cerulean Butterfly" from Mathematics of Fire

The poetry of Josh Wild is a glimpse into the mind of one who willingly struggles with every word for the sake of something unique. Sometimes aggressively political, other times curiously nostalgic, Wild senses the world around him and instinctively reacts with a variety of brave imagery and finely tuned storytelling.

Each individual chapbook is hand-sewn with four black and white photographs inside. Each copy of Mathematics of Fire was hand sewn by the staff of Bronze Man Books. The company held a "Sew Fest" to sew all the chapbooks- view photos of this event.

About the Author

Josh Wild graduated from Millikin University in the spring of 2006. Wild concluded his illustrious collegiate career with Mathematics of Fire, a project that earned him the distinction of graduating with honors from the Millikin English department in May 2006. A double major in English-Literature and English-Writing, Wild was a staple contributor to the university’s literary magazine, Collage. His writing earned him numerous honors, including multiple Dr. Grace Conant Writing Awards, given out annually to the top English students at the University. Since graduating, Wild has worked as a journalist, a factory worker, a staple remover, a learner of words, a scanner of legal documents, and a bubble wrapper of artwork and sharp, metallic objects generously termed “art.” He currently lives in Chicago.

About the Contributors

Carrie Seymour is the lead graphic designer for Mathematics of Fire. Through the printmaking process, she developed the cover image by utilizing a zinc plate. The final image was run through a printmaking press and scanned into a computer - for the regular edition of the chapbook. The special, limited edition chapbooks each have a one-of-a-kind, unique two-color intaglio print cover.

Carrie Seymour has long developed her strong interests in the observation and creation of art. In addition to her two academic concentrations--Graphic Design and Printmaking--she has skill and experience in photography, art gallery management, and new media design strategies. Carrie Seymour is keen to the complex relationship between an artist and the concept of perfection through imperfection. Seymour graduated in the Spring of 2007 with a B.F.A. in Commercial/Computer Design.
